Play Area, Library, Living Area and Utility Space

Play area
1. The area can be utilized as a tiny play house for the kids.
2. Paint the area with whimsical design and bright colours.
3. The shelves can be added to store toys.
4. A rug can create a softer look and feel while at the same time protects little feet.
Library
1. A small library can be created in the corner under the stairs.
2. Line the walls under the stairs with shelves - adjustable ones are a good idea, allowing you to vary and alter the spacing to store all sizes of books and magazines.
3. Painting the shelves to match the baseboard and other moldings gives the space an integrated feel.
4. Use recessed spotlights or angled floor lamps to illuminate the books as well as to provide reading light.
Living area
1. The area under the stairs can be created as a dining area or sitting area.
2. But one should make sure not to make the place over crowded.
3. Put a small dining table or small piece of furniture with light colours used.
Utility space
1. You may even be able to keep large kitchen appliances, like a freezer, tumble dryer, or washing machine under the stairs. Check out the practicalities of installing power outlets and plumbing.
2. The space can be closed by using wooden panels, plywood and will create a useful storage closet. Make sure that the space is adequately lit, locating the light switch by the door.
So, whether you choose to use your under the stairs space for storage, home office, cozy nook or a playhouse, never forget to add light to this tight space. A desk lamp is advisable for reading and study, overhead lighting for play areas, while display lights are great for your collectibles. Why not start planning now and convert that under the stair space into something you and your whole family will use and enjoy for a long time.
